In his work, Markus Ambach is focused on the representation of nature in city space. He issues that Zoo is the universal typology of any metropolis. Christina Wessely in her book Künstliche Tiere describes how natural items in urban spaces are addressed although it is aimed to avoid blends of culture and nature. The last chapter of the book cites Bernard von Brentano: „Everything that comes to you, and if it came from the end of the world, essentially comes from yourselve.“

Today’s zoological gardens try primarily to present animals in idyllic and pristine nature. How authentic are inartificial habitats if they are changed and endangered by humans? The intervetions in the zoological garden Schönbrunn in Vienna which are described in the presentation have been a test arrangement by the artist duo. A sunken car in the compound of rhinoceroses or a barrel of poison in the aquarium demonstrate disturbing signals for our expectations of nature and fauna. It is an experiment to pick out the inscenation of nature beyond objectivity and scientific argumentation.

Musik für Tiere

Do cows lactate more while listening to compositions of Mozart, do chickens lay more eggs or do they grow faster? The connection between the muse and the thriving of animals is not yet scientifically proven but virulent in thesis. The Leipzig media-artist dug the topic and besides field studies and performance has started to compose music for animals.
